Douglas F. Cannon retired from the Virginia Tech School of Communication faculty in 2023. Before becoming a full-time educator in 2010, he worked in journalism and public relations for 34 years. He was a daily newspaper reporter, weekly newspaper publisher, Army public affairs officer, and public relations counselor. He served as a communication executive for The United Methodist Church from 1984 to 2008 and was president of the Religion Communicators Council from 2008 to 2010 and again from 2012 to 2013. He is a Public Relations Society of America College of Fellows member.
